October Is the "Get Ahead Before You Get Behind" Month

Written by Hannah Morgan

A parent planning the fall and holiday season at a cozy kitchen table

You know the feeling. It's December 18th, you're refreshing a shipping tracker at 11pm, the costume you swore you'd return is still in the trunk, and the flights for spring break somehow doubled since you last looked. You tell yourself what you told yourself last year: next year will be different. 🎄

Here's the good news. Next year can be different, and it starts now. Not in November. Not "after Halloween." Right now, in October.

I call October the "get ahead before you get behind" month, and once you start treating it that way, the whole season feels different.

Why October is the sweet spot 📅

Three months out is the magic window. It's early enough that you still have real choices: the good costume sizes, the party venue you actually want, the hotel that isn't the last one left. And it's close enough that the season finally feels real, so you can make decisions instead of pushing them off.

It also matters for your head, not just your calendar. The holidays are one of the heaviest stretches of invisible work all year. All the remembering, the researching, the comparing, the "did anyone RSVP?" It usually lands on one person, and if you're reading this, there's a good chance that person is you.

When you plan in October, you're not adding more to your plate. You're choosing to carry that load when it's light, instead of when it's crushing.

What's actually on your plate right now 🗂️

Let's get it all out of your head and onto the page. Between now and spring, you're probably juggling some version of this:

  • Halloween costumes, school parades, and trick-or-treat plans
  • A fall or winter birthday (or two, or three)
  • Thanksgiving: hosting, traveling, or figuring out which one
  • Holiday gifts for kids, family, teachers, and coaches
  • Holiday cards, school parties, and that one cookie swap
  • Winter break childcare and travel
  • Spring break, which feels far away until it very much doesn't

Take a breath. Seeing it all in one place can feel like a lot at first. But it's also the first real moment of relief, because now you're looking at the whole landscape instead of getting ambushed by one piece at a time. This is exactly where we start with every new client, and it's amazing how much lighter people feel just from seeing the full list.

Your October game plan ✅

You don't have to finish the holidays in October. You just have to get each one moving. Here's where I'd focus your energy this month:

  1. Halloween: order costumes this week. The good sizes and the exact character your kid is obsessed with go fast. Ordering now means no 9pm Target run on the 30th.
  2. Birthdays: lock in the basics six weeks out. Pick the date, book the venue or activity, and send the invites. Party favors and cake can wait, but a booked spot can't.
  3. Thanksgiving: make the big decision. Hosting or traveling? Once you decide, book anything that needs booking and assign the dishes. Everything else falls into place from there.
  4. Holiday gifts: build the list and set a budget. Write down every person you're shopping for, then start ordering early so you're not at the mercy of December shipping delays.
  5. Spring break: yes, really, book it now. I know it sounds early. But booking in October means better hotel rates, more options, and zero scrambling in February. Future you will be so grateful.

Pick one or two to tackle this weekend. You'll be amazed how good it feels to cross them off.

Not sure where to start? 🔥

When everything is right in front of you, it all feels urgent. But it isn't all on fire. Run your list through three quick questions:

  • Does it have a hard deadline? Costumes, RSVPs, and travel bookings come first.
  • Will it cost more if I wait? Flights, hotels, and popular venues only get pricier.
  • Is this something only I can do? If not, it can be delegated, simplified, or let go entirely.

Whatever survives those three questions goes to the top. Everything else can wait its turn, or be handed off to someone else.

You don't have to carry this alone

Getting ahead isn't about being perfect. It's about giving your future self a gift: a December where you're present instead of panicked, and a season you actually get to enjoy.

And if reading this list made you feel tired instead of inspired, that's okay too. That's exactly what our team is here for. A Heron House manager can take the whole holiday load off your plate, from the costume order to the spring break booking, so you can show up for the moments that matter.
